A segment is a precast concrete segment for the outer shell of a shaft or tunnel. The precast segments form a complete ring. In modern tunnel construction, the segments are laid by a tunnel boring machine (TBM), which also supports itself in the axial direction on the edges of the segments already laid to achieve driving.
