Historic architecture meets environmentally conscious urban development.
Cannes, the glamorous city on the French Riviera, is known for its impressive architecture that combines elegance and history. The city boasts a stylish mix of Belle Époque buildings, modern buildings and Mediterranean flair.
In recent years, Cannes has invested heavily in forward-looking urban development. With numerous projects, the city is pursuing sustainable growth that focuses on ecological responsibility and quality of life. Plans include the greening of public spaces, energy-efficient buildings and optimized transport solutions.
The new Cannes cinema, the Cineum Cannes, a masterpiece of structural engineering using UHPC concrete, has also been built as part of this process.
What exactly is UHPC?
UHPC or UHPFRC (Ultra-high-performance fibre reinforced concrete) has outstanding material properties to enable structures and architectural works of art that far surpass conventional concrete construction in terms of processing time, intricacy and durability.
UHPC contains steel fibres between 1.5 % to 3 % of the total volume (120 kg/m3 and 240 kg/m3 ). The high micro steel fibre content to provide a strain-hardening behavior under tension and a ductile failure mode under compression. The relatively high content of steel fibres avoids a brittle failure when very high stresses under compression or bending are reached.
UHPC reaching 150 MPa under compression and showing a strain hardening load deflection behavior, a high packing density with a grain size of 5 mm and a water/cement ratio below 0.25.
KrampeHarex steel fibres guarantee these outstanding properties and make it possible to replace or reduce the reinforcement. Our stainless steel microfibres guarantee the structural and aesthetic properties and allow components to have a service life of 100 to 120 years.
"Why am I so fascinated by UHPC? The buildings that are created with UHPC seem to be from another world."
The Cineum Cannes - a UHPC masterpiece
In Cannes, the home of the International Film Festival, a new multiplex cinema was completed in 2022. Designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti, the visually stunning building is versatile in the truest sense of the word. Ricciotti's stunning aesthetic houses a four-storey cinema and 12 auditoriums with a total of 2,450 seats.
The majority of the main structure was built using reinforced concrete for the vertical structural elements and prestressed concrete for the horizontal elements. The building's polyhedron-shaped façade with a partially perforated façade is made entirely of white UHPC mounted on a steel truss structure. In the dark, some of the façade elements function as a projection screen on which film clips are shown.
