City-Tunnel Leipzig

Germany's first railroad tunnel with a new fire protection concept

Construction phase of City Tunnel Leipzig using steel fibre concrete for fire-resistant lining.

The Leipzig City Tunnel is a twin-tube railroad tunnel that was built under the city center using TBM tunnelling as part of the redesign of the Leipzig railroad junction.

The focus is on the railroad line, which was completed in 2013 and connects the historic Leipzig terminus station with the former Bavarian station underground. The tunnel route measures 3.2 km and has four stations.

Deutsche Bahn and the Free State of Saxony, as joint builders, used synthetic fibers for the first time for the fire protection of the concrete surfaces. Since then, this technology has been standard in all new German (railroad) tunnels.
